From Kingston to Zurich: The Journey of Norman Garrick
When Norman Garrick left the vibrant streets of Kingston, Jamaica, to chase his dreams in the United States, he never imagined that Switzerland would one day become his home. In a captivating episode of Jamaicans to the World, hosted by Xavier Murphy, Norman recounts how a spontaneous trip in 1985 transformed his life and led him to the picturesque city of Zurich.
A Jamaican Roots
Born and raised between Rockfort and Spanish Town, Norman’s early life was steeped in the rich culture of Jamaica. He pursued engineering at the University of the West Indies (UWI) before moving on to Purdue University, where he earned both his MS and PhD. His academic journey eventually led him to a professorship in civil engineering and urban planning at the University of Connecticut. This role opened doors for him, taking him across the globe—from the bustling cities of the U.S. to the serene landscapes of Sierra Leone and Asia.
A Dare That Changed Everything
Norman’s first encounter with Switzerland was anything but planned. A dare from a Swiss friend prompted him to save up for a trip, and he found himself in Zurich during Christmas. While it wasn’t love at first sight, something about the city lingered in his mind. Years later, after numerous work trips and rich global experiences, he returned to Zurich—and this time, he decided to stay.
Life in Zurich
Now enjoying a well-deserved retirement, Norman has embraced the tranquil life that Zurich offers. He appreciates the city’s efficiency, cultural vibrancy, and the easy access to nature. Living car-free, he resides near both the forest and the city center, allowing him to indulge in his passions—hiking, exploring quaint bookstores, and attending concerts and operas.
Yet, life in Zurich isn’t without its challenges. Norman candidly shares his struggles with the long, grey weeks of fog that blanket the city in November. His advice for anyone feeling down during this time? “Take a train to the top of a mountain and look down on the fog. It changes your perspective.” This simple yet profound insight reflects his ability to find beauty even in the dreariest of days.
Jamaican Pride Abroad
One of the most striking aspects of Norman’s journey is his reflection on how Jamaicans are perceived abroad. “Jamaica is a brand that carries weight,” he notes, recalling moments when locals in Switzerland recognized his accent and responded with admiration. This connection to his roots serves as a reminder of the pride many Jamaicans feel when representing their homeland on foreign soil.
