Jackson Town Health Centre Reopens: A New Dawn for Local Healthcare

JACKSON TOWN, Trelawny — A wave of excitement swept through the community as Health and Wellness Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton officially reopened the newly renovated Jackson Town Health Centre on Thursday. The ceremony, marked by a symbolic ribbon-cutting, was attended by local leaders and residents eager to celebrate this significant milestone.

The renovation, costing $23 million, is part of the Government’s ambitious $1-billion ‘Operation Refresh’ initiative. This program aims to enhance the appearance and functionality of health centres across Jamaica, ensuring that communities have access to quality healthcare right at their doorstep.

For local resident Orette Duffus, the reopening is a game-changer. “I am happy, happy about that. Is the best thing happen,” he exclaimed. With three children in tow, he no longer faces the hassle of traveling to Ulster Spring or Clarks Town for routine medical care. “The convenience is right here now, and nuff people like that,” he added, beaming with pride.

Senior citizen Wilfred “Sufferer” Ferguson, who resides in nearby Mahogany Hall, echoed Duffus’s sentiments. “I really appreciate it. I feel good, real good too,” he said, relieved that he and his wife can now access services without the early morning rush to Clarks Town. “A yah so me a come now. My wife date is due Monday morning,” he shared, highlighting the personal impact of the health centre’s reopening.

Member of Parliament for Trelawny Southern, Marisa Dalrymple Philibert, praised the community for their patience during the two-year closure. “Good things come to those who wait,” she remarked, emphasizing the pride and resilience of the residents. The facility had been closed due to structural issues, with the back room being condemned. “It was sinking,” she explained, underscoring the importance of the renovations.

In his keynote address, Minister Tufton acknowledged the community’s wait and the significance of the refurbishment. “I feel you breathing a sigh of relief, exhaling,” he said, recognizing the emotional weight of the moment. He elaborated on the holistic approach taken in the renovations, ensuring that both staff and residents benefit from a comfortable environment. “They must feel like they want to get up and go to work every day,” he noted, highlighting the need for amenities like a kitchenette and comfortable patient areas.

The reopening of the Jackson Town Health Centre is not just about bricks and mortar; it symbolizes a renewed commitment to health and wellness in the community. As residents gather to share their stories of relief and gratitude, the centre stands as a beacon of hope and progress.

With this revitalized facility, the people of Jackson Town and surrounding areas can look forward to improved healthcare access, making it easier for families to receive essential services. As Orette Duffus put it, “It’s the best thing happen.”
