The Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) SANGAM: A Catalyst for Innovation and Entrepreneurship
The Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), recently hosted the STPI SANGAM event—a groundbreaking initiative designed to unite startups, investors, mentors, and industry leaders. This event, held at the Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre, aimed to foster innovation, accelerate entrepreneurial ventures, and drive technological advancements across various sectors. The gathering was graced by esteemed dignitaries, including Shri S. Krishnan, Secretary of MeitY, who served as the Chief Guest, alongside Shri K. K. Singh, Joint Secretary of MeitY, and Shri Arvind Kumar, Director General of STPI.
Startups Driving India’s Future
In his keynote address, Shri S. Krishnan emphasized the crucial role of startups in shaping India’s economic landscape. He stated, “Startups are the engines of innovation and economic growth. Their disruptive spirit, agility, and commitment to solving real-world challenges are shaping India’s future.” He highlighted that initiatives like the Next Generation Incubation Scheme (NGIS) and platforms such as STPI SANGAM are not merely supporting startups but are also creating an ecosystem where innovative ideas can transform into impactful businesses. The government’s commitment to nurturing this landscape aims to empower entrepreneurs to scale, innovate, and enhance India’s global competitiveness.
Creating an Impactful Startup Ecosystem
Shri Arvind Kumar, Director General of STPI, shared his insights on the importance of inclusivity in fostering a robust innovation ecosystem. He noted that 44% of STPI’s startup portfolio comprises women entrepreneurs, many hailing from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. “It is our responsibility to nurture their aspirations and provide them with the resources they need,” he stated. Under the NGIS scheme, STPI has supported 685 startups, provided seed funding to 136 of them, and created over 7,000 jobs. This commitment to inclusivity is vital for ensuring that every startup, regardless of its geographical location, has the opportunity to thrive.
India Unlocking New Opportunities
Shri K. K. Singh, Joint Secretary of MeitY, further emphasized the significance of a robust innovation ecosystem. He remarked that by accelerating startup growth, India can unlock new opportunities, create jobs, and achieve economic self-reliance. “India’s startup ecosystem is witnessing unprecedented growth, and STPI has played a critical role in fostering this transformation,” he noted. The NGIS has been a game-changer, providing essential funding, mentorship, and market access to emerging startups. Singh called for a continued focus on deep-tech innovation and ensuring that entrepreneurs in smaller cities receive the necessary support to succeed.
Empowering Future Entrepreneurs
Ms. Farzana Haque, an investor and global business leader, delivered an inspiring address that underscored the importance of empowering students to become future entrepreneurs. She advocated for a shift toward self-reliance and job creation, stating, “Entrepreneurship is not just about building businesses; it is about creating opportunities, driving self-reliance, and shaping the future.” Haque highlighted India’s potential to become a global innovation hub, emphasizing the need for the right ideas to receive adequate backing. She stressed that supporting women entrepreneurs and fostering student-led innovations will unlock a new wave of growth in the startup ecosystem.
