From her early days at Coral Springs Christian Academy, Shaneil was surrounded by a rich tapestry of cultures. “I grew up with friends from all walks of life—British, Indian, Vietnamese, Haitian, and Jamaican,” she recalls. This early exposure to diversity shaped her worldview, instilling a sense of acceptance and appreciation for different backgrounds. Despite being born in the USA, Shaneil always felt a strong connection to Jamaica. “In my heart, I was Jamaican then, and I still am,” she affirms.

With her family already holding dual citizenship, Shaneil’s journey to becoming a Jamaican citizen felt like a natural progression. “I always knew what I wanted,” she says, reflecting on her determination. Last year, she and her younger brother achieved this milestone, solidifying their ties to their Jamaican roots. Recently graduating Magna Cum Laude from Florida Atlantic University with a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, Shaneil is a testament to the Jamaican saying, “we likkle but we tallawah.” She emphasizes, “We’re not to be underestimated. You can’t discount our abilities.” Her determination shines through as she speaks about her goals and aspirations. “I know where I am going, and I’m committed to excelling.”

Celebrating Brand Jamaica

Shaneil is passionate about what it means to be Jamaican. “Brand Jamaica represents the remarkable value of our heritage and culture,” she explains. “It’s our pride.” This pride is reflected in her creative pursuits as well. A talented musician, Shaneil plays the piano, composes, sings, and writes poetry. The performing arts are her canvas, allowing her to express her cultural identity.
