The Issa Family: A Legacy of Health and Hope in Jamaica
The Issa family has long been a beacon of health and wellness in Jamaica, starting with the opening of the first Mary Issa clinic in downtown Kingston back in 1955. This pioneering effort laid the groundwork for a legacy that continues to thrive today. Fast forward seventy years, and Mary Issa’s grandson, Paul Issa, is stepping up to lead a new chapter in this story with the upcoming Mary Issa Pediatric and Adolescent Health facility, set to open next year.
A New Beginning in St Ann
The new clinic, located in Richmond near Priory in St Ann, is already complete, according to Paul Issa. He recently announced this exciting development during the launch of the Issa Trust Foundation’s 20th anniversary benefit concert. Scheduled for Saturday, May 17, at the Couples Sans Souci hotel in Prospect, St Mary, the concert aims to raise funds for the new health facility.
International reggae star Shaggy will headline the event, supported by rising star Lila Iké and Tessanne Chin’s children’s performing group, Voice Box. With such a stellar lineup, attendees can expect a night filled with vibrant performances and heartfelt contributions to a worthy cause.
Fundraising Goals and Community Support
The concert is not just a celebration; it’s a crucial part of the fundraising effort for the new clinic, which is projected to cost around US$2 million. “Our aim is to make US$500,000,” Paul Issa shared with The Gleaner. “But we’re optimistic that the generosity of ticket buyers and donors will help us reach our goal.”
While the structure is complete, finishing touches like windows and doors are still needed, along with the installation of medical equipment. “A lot of that equipment will be donated by various international foundations,” Issa added, expressing his confidence in the project’s completion.
Quality Entertainment for a Worthy Cause
Concert-goers can look forward to an unforgettable evening, with a focus on quality over quantity. Shaggy, who rose to fame in the ‘90s with hits like "Oh Carolina" and "It Wasn’t Me," is sure to bring his signature energy to the stage. Lila Iké, a fresh voice in reggae, has also made waves with songs like "Where I’m Coming From" and "Sweet Inspiration."
The event will be emceed by the dynamic duo of Wayne Marshall and Tami Chin, ensuring a lively atmosphere throughout the night. Local leaders, including Mayor of St Ann’s Bay, Michael Belnavis, and Port Maria’s Fitzroy Wilson, have expressed optimism about the event, hoping for smooth traffic flow on the day.
Ticket Information and Community Involvement
Tickets for this highly anticipated concert are available at various locations, including Fontana Pharmacy in Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, as well as Couples Resorts and Jacana outlets. The community is rallying behind this initiative, eager to support a cause that promises to enhance healthcare for children and adolescents in Jamaica.
As Paul Issa stated, “We’ve come this far, and I’m optimistic we’ll make it to the finish line.” With the community’s support and the excitement surrounding the concert, the future looks bright for the Mary Issa Pediatric and Adolescent Health facility.
