Sandals Resorts International Town Hall: A Rallying Cry for Jamaica
In a vibrant display of resilience and unity, Sandals Resorts International Executive Chairman Adam Stewart took center stage at a recent town hall meeting, captivating an audience of over 350 travel advisors, tourism officials, and industry leaders. The event, aptly named “Back to Jamaica,” was streamed live to 11,000 travel advisors across the globe, showcasing the island’s unwavering spirit following the challenges posed by Hurricane Melissa.
Stewart’s fiery declaration that “There is no storm or weather event that is going to stop Jamaica” ignited enthusiastic applause from the crowd. His words resonated deeply, reflecting the collective determination to rebuild and thrive. The town hall, held just before the reopening of five Sandals resorts, was a celebration of Jamaica’s resilience and a call to action for the tourism industry.
A Day of Celebration and Insight
The all-day event was a feast for the senses, filled with lights, music, and delicious food. It served as a platform for travel advisors to connect with key stakeholders and learn about the recovery efforts undertaken by Sandals and Beaches. Attendees were treated to an exclusive preview of the newly revamped Sandals Dunn’s River, located near Ocho Rios, St Ann.
Stewart emphasized that Sandals would prioritize the entire tourism industry over short-term profits. “My father, the late Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart, always said: ‘The Caribbean, Jamaica, and Sandals Resorts were at their absolute best in times of adversity,’” he shared, echoing a sentiment that resonated throughout the day.
Support from Industry Leaders
The event was bolstered by the presence of influential figures like Zane Kerby, president and CEO of the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA), and Donovan White, the Jamaican Director of Tourism. Kerby urged travel advisors to spread the word that Jamaica is open for business, emphasizing their crucial role as demand creators. “Keep sending your clients here,” he encouraged, reinforcing Jamaica’s status as a top destination for American travelers.
American Airlines’ Commercial Director, Alexander Cavalcanti, reassured attendees that the airline had increased flights to Jamaica post-hurricane, demonstrating a commitment to the island’s recovery. “We are here to support Jamaica,” he affirmed, highlighting the airline’s role in delivering relief supplies and maintaining operations.
A Community Effort
Shane Munroe, head of Montego Bay Jamaica Airports (MBJ), reported that Sangster International Airport was fully operational, with all 29 airlines continuing to serve the island. Meanwhile, Donovan White provided an optimistic overview of recovery efforts, noting that 80% of power and water services had been restored and that hotel room availability was steadily increasing.
The day also featured a heartwarming performance by children from Steer Town, St Ann, who delighted the audience with song and dance, embodying the island’s vibrant culture and spirit.
Looking Ahead
As the town hall concluded, the message was clear: Jamaica is resilient, and the tourism industry is ready to bounce back stronger than ever. With the collective efforts of Sandals, travel advisors, and local stakeholders, the future looks bright for this beloved Caribbean destination. Will you be part of Jamaica’s comeback story?
