Meet the Visionary Behind Seacrets: Ocean City’s Iconic Destination

The Dual Vibes of Seacrets: A Caribbean Oasis in Ocean City

Seacrets, a vibrant hotspot in Ocean City, Maryland, offers a unique blend of experiences that cater to both party enthusiasts and families seeking a laid-back dining atmosphere. “If you go to the dance hall, people are packed together and bumping into each other, dancing,” says Butch Arbin, captain of the Ocean City Beach Patrol, who has been safeguarding the beach for over five decades. “But if you go to another part of Seacrets, you’ll see families sitting down and eating dinner.” This dichotomy makes Seacrets a fascinating destination for locals and tourists alike.

A Mixed Bag of Opinions

While some locals view Seacrets as a tourist trap, others embrace its Caribbean charm. Arbin, who spends his summers in West Ocean City, fondly recalls taking a couple he met on a church mission trip to Seacrets. “They’re Jamaican,” he shares. “They loved it.” This sentiment reflects the bar’s ability to resonate with visitors from diverse backgrounds, making it a beloved spot for many.

George Larson and his wife, Michele, both 65, have been loyal patrons since Seacrets opened its doors. Living just across the street in a condo, they appreciate the lively atmosphere. “We love the party vibe,” George says. “Sometimes, we stay late into the night; other times, we’ll stay for a few hours.” However, they prefer to skip the bay area, noting that it tends to attract a younger crowd. “I don’t like to take my shoes off and get into the water,” he admits.

Crowds and Comfort Zones

Not everyone shares the same enthusiasm for the bustling scene. Mickie Meinhardt, owner of The Buzzed Word, a local bookstore and wine bar, avoids Seacrets during the summer months. “If you’re crowd-averse and don’t want to be packed into a space with a lot of sweaty tourists, it’s not necessarily a place you feel the need to go to,” she explains. However, she finds joy in visiting during the offseason for a more relaxed experience.

Ron Pichini, a resident of the nearby Wight Bay condos, acknowledges that while things can get a bit rowdy, Seacrets has generally been a good neighbor. “The issues we have are not with Seacrets or any of their staff. It’s the drunken patrons,” he notes, highlighting the occasional disturbances caused by exuberant visitors.

Keeping the Peace

Owner Leighton Moore takes community safety seriously. He has rebranded the traditional “doorman” role to “peace police,” with staff members donning bright-orange T-shirts emblazoned with their new title. “They try to keep the peace,” Moore explains. “They also answer questions and help people find their way around the property.” This initiative reflects a commitment to ensuring that everyone can enjoy their time at Seacrets without worry.

A Tropical Escape

Despite the mixed reviews, most visitors flock to Seacrets for the carefree Caribbean atmosphere. With over 300 fresh palm trees brought in annually from Florida, guests can sip on tropical drinks with their toes in the sand. The camaraderie among fellow vacationers adds to the allure, creating a sense of community that transcends the hustle and bustle.

As the sun sets over the bay, the question lingers: What will your Seacrets experience be? Whether you’re dancing the night away or enjoying a quiet meal, this iconic venue promises something for everyone.
