The Sound of Third World
Describing their sound, former lead singer Bunny Rugs once said, “Strictly a reggae band, no. Definitely a reggae band, yes.” This encapsulates the essence of Third World’s music. Guitarist Cat Coore added, “The hybrid of various types of music is a natural thing because, by growing up in Jamaica, we know the direct roots of reggae and ska.” This blend of influences has allowed Third World to create a sound that is both authentic and innovative.
The Journey Begins
Third World was formed in 1973 by a group of talented musicians, including Stephen “Cat” Coore and Michael “Ibo” Cooper. They made their live debut at Jamaica’s Independence celebration and quickly became known for their self-contained performances. Their first single, “Railroad Track,” was released in 1974, and by 1975, they were touring with Bob Marley, marking the beginning of their rise to fame.
Their self-titled debut album, released in 1976, featured a popular cover of the classic “Satta Massagana.” The band’s breakthrough came with the album “Journey to Addis” in 1978, which included the hit “Now That We’ve Found Love.” This track not only topped the charts but also solidified Third World’s place in the music scene.
A Commitment to Community
Beyond their musical achievements, Third World is deeply committed to giving back. They serve as Goodwill Ambassadors for the Issa Trust Foundation, providing pediatric care and education in rural Jamaica. They are also involved with the Alligator Head Foundation, promoting clean ocean initiatives. Their dedication to social causes reflects the heart and soul of reggae music—community, love, and unity.
Current Line-Up
Today, the band continues to thrive with a lineup that includes Stephen “Cat” Coore, Richard “Bassie” Daley, Tony “Ruption” Williams, Norris “Noriega” Webb, and AJ Brown. Their passion for music and commitment to their roots ensure that Third World remains a vital part of the reggae landscape.
As they prepare for their upcoming show in Brighton, one can’t help but wonder: What new heights will Third World reach in the next 52 years? With their rich history and unwavering spirit, the future looks bright for these reggae legends.
