Inez Turner: A Jamaican Trailblazer Inducted into the CIAA Hall of Fame

Jamaican Olympian and celebrated track and field coach Inez Turner has made history once again, this time by being inducted into the 2025 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Hall of Fame. This prestigious recognition highlights her immense contributions to collegiate athletics and her unwavering commitment to nurturing young talent.

The induction ceremony, which took place over the weekend, was a heartfelt tribute to Turner’s remarkable journey as both an athlete and a coach. Attendees celebrated her leadership and the incredible success she has brought to every program she has touched. “It’s a blessing to be recognized among such esteemed company,” Turner shared during the event, her voice filled with emotion.

Since taking the helm at Fayetteville State University (FSU) in 2017, Turner has transformed the Broncos’ athletic program into a powerhouse within the CIAA. Under her guidance, the women’s cross-country team has clinched six consecutive conference championships, while the men’s team has celebrated back-to-back titles. The track and field teams have also flourished, with FSU capturing multiple CIAA indoor and outdoor championships. In 2024, the women’s indoor track and field team won its conference title for the third time, showcasing the school’s rapid ascent in collegiate athletics.

Before her impactful tenure at FSU, Turner was already making waves at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), where she spent eight successful years. Her coaching prowess earned her multiple CIAA Coach of the Year honors, leading WSSU to nine conference championships across cross country and track and field. “Her dedication to her athletes is unmatched,” remarked a former colleague, highlighting Turner’s ability to inspire and motivate.

Expressing her gratitude on Facebook, Turner reflected on her journey and the support she has received. “I just want to proclaim the name of Jesus!! This 2025 CIAA induction will be one that holds a special place in my heart for a very long time,” she wrote. She thanked her family, friends, and the FSU community for their unwavering support, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and community in achieving success.

Turner also took the opportunity to inspire young student-athletes, encouraging them to embrace perseverance and dedication. “Stay the course, pay your dues, and do your part because it comes back. This journey is joy unspeakable and full of glory,” she advised, reminding them that hard work pays off.

As an Olympian, Turner represented Jamaica at the 1996 Atlanta Games, competing in the 800m and helping the 4x400m relay team finish fourth. Her accolades include a gold medal in the 800m at the 1994 Commonwealth Games and a bronze in the 4x400m relay at the 1997 World Championships. She was a force to be reckoned with, winning seven gold medals at the Carifta Games from 1988 to 1991 and becoming the first athlete from an English-speaking Caribbean country to break the two-minute barrier in the 800m.

Turner’s collegiate career was equally impressive. At Barton Community College, she earned 16 National Junior College All-American titles and still holds several school records. Her time at Texas State University saw her become a two-time NCAA 800m champion and a celebrated figure at the Penn Relays, eventually earning a spot in the Penn Relays Wall of Fame.

Transitioning to coaching, Turner has continued to shine, mentoring countless athletes and leading them to championships. Her coaching record boasts an astounding 23 CIAA Championship titles, each accompanied by accolades that reflect her dedication and expertise.

Beyond her coaching achievements, Turner is committed to giving back to her community. In 2012, she founded the Inez Turner Foundation to support underprivileged students at Vere Technical High School, her alma mater. She has also served as a keynote speaker at the US-JA International College Fair, helping student-athletes from developing nations secure scholarship opportunities.

As Inez Turner continues to inspire the next generation of athletes, one can’t help but wonder: What new heights will she help them reach next?
