Health Ministry Urges Corporate Jamaica to ‘Make a Move’ | News

Corporate Wellness Challenge 2.0: A Bold Step Towards Healthier Workplaces

With the vibrant beats of island rhythms echoing through the air, the Ministry of Health & Wellness kicked off the Corporate Wellness Challenge 2.0 – “8×8 Edition” on Thursday, June 19, 2025. The launch took place at the picturesque Edward Seaga Suite, Devon House East Lawn in Kingston, setting the stage for a transformative initiative aimed at reshaping workplace culture across Jamaica.

A Call to Action for Healthier Lifestyles

The 8×8 Challenge invites companies to embark on an eight-month journey filled with wellness-focused activities. These activities span crucial areas such as physical fitness, nutrition, health screenings, smoking cessation, mental health, and sexual health education. With many Jamaicans spending a significant portion of their day at work, the initiative aims to turn offices into hubs of movement, motivation, and meaningful change.

During the launch, Minister of Health & Wellness, Dr. Christopher Tufton, delivered a powerful keynote address. He highlighted the urgent need for action in light of Jamaica’s ongoing non-communicable disease (NCD) crisis. “NCDs such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and cancer are robbing us of our people, our productivity, and our potential,” he stated. “In 2020, nearly 17,000 Jamaicans died from NCDs, accounting for almost eight out of every 10 deaths. This Corporate Wellness Challenge is a proactive solution that brings health into the everyday rhythm of work life.”

New Components to Enhance Engagement

To further energize the challenge, Minister Tufton announced two exciting new components for companies to integrate:

  • “Sneaker Day”: A weekly occasion where employees wear their running or walking shoes to work, encouraging light, frequent physical activity throughout the day.

  • “Sole-2-Sole Giving”: Inspired by a previous charitable initiative, this component challenges companies to donate walking or running shoes to under-resourced children or institutions, making wellness accessible to all.

These additions aim to deepen the culture of wellness, not just within companies but also across communities. “It’s about creating a ripple effect,” the Minister emphasized, “where wellness becomes a shared value.”

Companies on Board and Ready to Move

Several leading companies have already signed up for the challenge, including Sagicor Life Jamaica, Massy Gas Products, National Housing Trust, and Seprod. As the excitement builds, more organizations are expected to join the movement. Participants will have the chance to earn points, gain national recognition, and, most importantly, foster a work environment that supports employee health, engagement, and resilience.

“This challenge is more than a competition; it’s a movement,” Minister Tufton declared passionately. “A movement to mek a move, mek a difference, and mek wellness the norm in Jamaican business.”

A Community Effort for a Healthier Future

The Ministry is actively encouraging companies across Jamaica to register and be part of this transformative journey toward a healthier workforce and nation. As the initiative unfolds, one can’t help but wonder: will your workplace be the next to embrace this vibrant call to action?

With the spirit of community and collaboration at its core, the Corporate Wellness Challenge 2.0 is not just about individual health; it’s about creating a culture where wellness thrives, making Jamaica a healthier place for everyone.
