Don Wehby Honored as 2025 GKMS/WU ICON at CHAMPS
In a heartfelt ceremony at the National Stadium on Friday afternoon, the retired GraceKennedy Group CEO, The Honourable Don Wehby, OJ, CD, was named the 2025 GKMS/WU ICON during the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Championships (CHAMPS). This prestigious award, presented by GraceKennedy Money Services (GKMS) and Western Union, celebrates Wehby’s remarkable legacy as both a former CHAMPS athlete and a transformative leader in the corporate world.
Wehby’s journey with CHAMPS began nearly five decades ago when he was a student-athlete at St. George’s College. From 1977 to 1982, he showcased his talent as a hurdler, clinching the Class 3 100-metre hurdles title in 1978 and earning silver medals in the 110-metre and open 400-metre hurdles in 1982. These early accomplishments ignited a lifelong passion for athletics and solidified his connection to Jamaica’s iconic schoolboy event.
As the Group CEO of GraceKennedy, Wehby played a pivotal role in the modern era of CHAMPS. Under his leadership, the company committed over US$1 million annually to support the championships, marking it as their largest sponsorship investment globally. But Wehby’s influence extended far beyond financial contributions; his consistent presence at CHAMPS launches and unwavering attendance at the Saturday finals demonstrated his deep commitment to the event.
“Don Wehby’s vision and dedication have been instrumental in elevating CHAMPS to international recognition,” remarked Grace Burnett, President and CEO of GraceKennedy Money Services. “His belief in the power of youth and sport has not only transformed this event but also inspired countless young athletes across Jamaica. We are honoured to celebrate his extraordinary contributions.”
Margaret Campbell, Chief Operating Officer of GKMS, echoed these sentiments, stating, “Don’s passion for CHAMPS was undeniable. He understood the profound impact this event has on our youth and our nation. Under his leadership, GraceKennedy’s support went beyond sponsorship—it became a true partnership focused on fostering excellence and empowering the next generation.”
The GKMS/WU ICON Award is reserved for individuals whose passion and contributions have left a lasting imprint on CHAMPS, inspiring future generations of Jamaican athletes. At the ceremony, Wehby was represented by Mrs. Camile Mundell Barrett, his executive assistant for 23 years, who accepted the award on his behalf.
Emcee Ryan Dixon took a moment to reflect on Wehby’s inspiring journey—from a determined young hurdler to a highly respected corporate leader. A Chartered Accountant, former Government Minister and Senator, and now retired CEO of one of the Caribbean’s largest conglomerates, Wehby’s career exemplifies the values of discipline, commitment, and service.
Wehby retired as Group CEO of GraceKennedy in February 2025, capping a remarkable career that saw him honored with the Order of Jamaica in 2024 for his contributions to business and national development.
With the ICON award, CHAMPS 2025 not only celebrated its present stars but also honored a man whose lifelong belief in the power of sport continues to shape the future of Jamaica’s youth. As the next generation of athletes prepares to take the stage, one can’t help but wonder: who will rise to follow in the footsteps of legends like Don Wehby?
