Discovering the Iconic Half Moon Resort in Jamaica
You won’t be on Jamaican soil long before you realize how iconic Half Moon is. This luxurious resort has hosted everyone from Queen Elizabeth and the Kennedys to Frank Sinatra and 50 Cent since it opened in 1954. I had the pleasure of spending a weekend there this past spring, and it certainly lived up to its incredible legacy. Here’s what to expect during a stay at Half Moon.
At a Glance
Half Moon boasts an impressive array of amenities:
- 219 rooms and suites and 19 villas
- Seven restaurants, three bars, and three cafes
- Tennis and pickleball courts, an 18-hole golf course, and an equestrian center
- Two miles of private beaches and three pools
Details of My Stay
My husband and I landed in Montego Bay for a three-night stay at Half Moon in May. We settled into an Estate Ocean Room on the newer Eclipse side of the resort. While the original Founder’s Cove exudes a sumptuous glamor with dark wood and colorful prints, Eclipse offers a fresh appeal with white and rattan touches.
The Estate Ocean Room was nothing short of glorious. The bed and linens were everything you’d expect from a resort of this caliber, but the room layout was exceptional. It featured a wraparound balcony accessible from both the main room and a door next to the shower. The spacious bathroom was flooded with natural light, boasting double sinks and a soaking tub.
Jamaican cuisine is a treasure, and Half Moon showcases it beautifully. The highlight was the Friday night beach barbecue, featuring fresh salads, grilled seafood, jerk chicken, and curried goat. We also enjoyed a multi-course meal with wine pairings at Sugar Mill, the resort’s fine dining restaurant, where the accommodating chef made sure my dietary restrictions were met.
Every morning, I savored ackee and saltfish, Jamaica’s national dish, on our terrace. Lester’s Bar became our evening hangout, where the inventive cocktails and lively staff made for unforgettable nights.
What I Liked
Impeccable Service
The service at Half Moon is remarkable. Many staff members have been there for decades, and they anticipate your needs before you even ask. It feels like visiting an old friend’s extravagant home rather than staying at a hotel.
Culinary Delights
The food is exceptional, whether you’re indulging in fine dining at Sugar Mill or enjoying a casual lunch at Seagrape. Don’t miss the garden tour, where much of the resort’s fresh produce is sourced.
The Spa Experience
Fern Tree, a Salamander Spa, ranks among the top spas I’ve ever visited. With immaculate facilities, a quiet courtyard pool, and a three-tiered garden fountain pool, it’s a serene oasis. The massage I received was nothing short of fantastic.
Local Art
Half Moon supports local artists, enriching the guest experience. The resort even has a resident artist, Janice Rankin, who teaches painting classes in the Rainforest Room.
In Closing
Half Moon is one of the most iconic resorts in the Caribbean, blending Jamaican luxury and culture into an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re lounging on the beach, indulging in gourmet meals, or enjoying the vibrant local art, this resort promises a slice of paradise. What will you discover on your visit?
