Dr. Jodi Jackto-Tafari: A Prescription of Warmth and Honesty
In the bustling heart of St. James, Dr. Jodi Jackto-Tafari stands out as a beacon of hope and care at Sekhmet Medical Center. Her unique blend of relatable warmth and direct honesty has earned her a loyal following among patients, making her practice a trusted haven for many. “I wear my emotions on my sleeve and tell you how it is,” she shares, reflecting on the authenticity that keeps her patients coming back. “I tell you the plain truth, and patients love that.”
Dr. Jackto-Tafari’s journey into medicine was inspired by her mother, Jacqueline Wollery, who selflessly cared for less fortunate children in their community of Mineral Heights, Clarendon. “I knew then when I was eight that I wanted to do something that would have an impact,” she recalls, a sentiment that has guided her throughout her career.
Her academic journey began at Glenmuir High School and continued at Hampton School for Girls, where she excelled in the sciences. “I was an A student for the most part,” she reminisces, “but I was hard-headed and focused on what I loved.” At just 16, she ventured to North America to study medicine at Saint Augustine’s College in North Carolina, where she thrived among students from prestigious Ivy League schools. “I realized that Jamaica is where I wanted to be. It is my home base,” she asserts, emphasizing her commitment to making a difference back home.
Returning to Jamaica at 22, Dr. Jackto-Tafari completed her medical training at The University of the West Indies, Mona, and quickly made a name for herself at Cornwall Regional Hospital. “I would be alone in the emergency room sometimes,” she recalls, highlighting her early responsibilities and the trust placed in her by senior doctors. Her easygoing bedside manner and use of Jamaican vernacular helped her connect with patients, making her a beloved figure in the community.
After years in the public sector, she took a leap of faith and opened Sekhmet Medical Center in 2019. “I wanted to see the everyday Jamaican as I always wanted to,” she explains. Her practice quickly gained a reputation for exceptional customer service and attention to detail, setting it apart from others.
In 2022, she expanded her vision by launching Accu Lab, a medical diagnostics facility that addresses gaps in Jamaica’s healthcare system. “We do everything from haematology to genetic testing,” she explains, noting the importance of timely results for patients. With locations now in Bogue, downtown Montego Bay, Mount Salem, and Falmouth, Dr. Jackto-Tafari’s impact is growing.
Her entrepreneurial spirit shines through as she encourages other doctors to embrace their ambitions. “I want them to understand that they shouldn’t be fearful to take up space,” she advises. “There is so much happiness and contentment to be had on the other side of fear.”
Dr. Jackto-Tafari’s journey is a testament to the power of authenticity, compassion, and the relentless pursuit of one’s dreams. As she continues to expand her practice and inspire others, one can’t help but wonder: what’s next for this remarkable physician and entrepreneur?
