MADCash, Malaysian Fintech Startup, Secures Pre-Series A Funding Round

MADCash: Empowering Women Entrepreneurs Through Microfunding

In a significant stride towards financial inclusion and empowerment, MADCash, a Malaysian fintech startup, has successfully completed its Pre-Series A funding round, as announced in a press release on October 3. The company secured an impressive RM5 million investment, led by Artem Ventures and supported by MSW Ventures and ScaleUp Founders Fund. This funding marks a pivotal moment for MADCash, which is dedicated to providing microfunding to women entrepreneurs, particularly those who are unbanked or underbanked.

The Vision Behind MADCash

MADCash stands for Multiply, Assist, Donate, encapsulating the startup’s mission to uplift women entrepreneurs by not only providing financial support but also fostering a sustainable ecosystem for their growth. The founders recognized a pressing need during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic when many women entrepreneurs struggled to restart their businesses after lockdowns. The initial distribution of RM3,000 to three women led to a remarkable return of RM17,000 in the following month, igniting the vision for MADCash.

Strategic Use of Funds

The newly acquired funds will be strategically allocated to enhance MADCash’s online platform through the integration of AI technology, which aims to streamline operations and improve user experience. Additionally, the funds will cover operational and marketing expenses, allowing MADCash to expand its reach across Southeast Asia. Nuraizah Shamsul Baharin, the managing director of MADCash, expressed excitement about the future, stating that the team has "so much in the work pipeline," including the launch of the MADCash Academy, which will provide educational resources for women entrepreneurs.

Welcoming New Leadership

In conjunction with the funding announcement, MADCash has welcomed Musyrifah Malek as a co-founder. Musyrifah brings a wealth of legal expertise that is expected to strengthen the company’s corporate governance policies and practices. This strategic addition to the leadership team underscores MADCash’s commitment to building a robust organizational framework as it scales its operations.

A Holistic Approach to Funding

MADCash’s approach to funding goes beyond mere financial assistance. The startup aims to create an alternative credit scoring system that will enhance the bankability of the entrepreneurs it supports. This innovative model is designed to empower women by providing them with the tools and resources they need to succeed in the long term. Nuraizah, a seasoned technopreneur and former president of the Women Entrepreneur Network Association Malaysia (WENA), emphasizes the importance of this holistic approach in fostering self-sufficiency among women entrepreneurs.

The Impact of Financial Inclusion

The significance of MADCash’s mission is echoed by its investors. Tunku Omar Asraf, principal of Artem Ventures, highlighted the importance of financial inclusion in addressing poverty and gender inequality, which are critical issues in the Southeast Asian region. Jeffrey Seah, general partner at MSW Ventures, noted that supporting the unbanked and underbanked is a pressing challenge in the digital economy, and MADCash’s innovative business model offers a sustainable solution.

Growth and Future Aspirations

Since its inception, MADCash has made remarkable strides. In 2022, the startup had supported only 83 women with a mere US$20,000 in microfunds. Fast forward to today, and MADCash is on track to extend its support to over 800 women by the end of the year, with a total fund management of US$700,000. Partnerships with notable financial institutions, including Hong Leong Islamic Bank and PayNet, further bolster MADCash’s credibility and operational capacity.

Building an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem

The RM5 million investment is not just a financial boost for MADCash; it represents a commitment to nurturing an entire ecosystem of women entrepreneurs. By focusing on education, financial literacy, and sustainable business practices, MADCash aims to create a ripple effect that empowers women to thrive in their ventures. The startup’s innovative approach to microfunding and its dedication to supporting women entrepreneurs position it as a key player in the fintech landscape of Southeast Asia.

Looking Ahead

As MADCash embarks on this new chapter, the team is poised to leverage its funding to enhance its platform, expand its reach, and continue its mission of empowering women entrepreneurs. With a clear vision and a strong support network, MADCash is set to make a lasting impact on the entrepreneurial landscape in Malaysia and beyond.
