JamCoders Summer Camp: A Gateway to Tech Excellence for Jamaican Youth
Applications are now open for the JamCoders summer camp, a vibrant initiative aimed at empowering Jamaican high school students with essential skills in algorithms, programming, and computational thinking. This high-impact program is not just about coding; it’s about shaping the future leaders of technology, engineering, and the sciences.
Who Can Join?
The camp targets students from third to fifth form, carefully selected from high schools across Jamaica based on their academic potential and a keen interest in computing and problem-solving. Since its inception, JamCoders has become a vital pipeline for nurturing young talent, helping them realize their potential in the tech world.
A Proven Track Record
Now in its fourth year, the JamCoders Summer Camp has successfully trained nearly 200 students from all corners of the island over the past four summers. Launched in 2022 at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona campus, the camp continues to thrive, offering a unique blend of rigorous academics and hands-on experience.
A Day in the Life at JamCoders
Participants dive into a structured daily schedule that mirrors the best international computing camps. Each day includes two one-hour lectures in the morning and afternoon, followed by three hours of hands-on programming. This immersive format allows students to quickly gain fluency in algorithms, coding, and analytical problem-solving.
Dr. Daniel Fokum, a senior lecturer in computer science at UWI Mona, emphasizes the camp’s intensity. “JamCoders is about exposing Jamaican students to rigorous computer science at an early stage and showing them that they are capable of competing at the highest international level,” he explains. “The camp builds confidence, discipline, and real problem-solving skills.”
Inspired by Global Success
JamCoders was conceived by Jamar McNaughton, better known as the internationally acclaimed reggae artist Chronixx. His vision was inspired by the AddisCoder program in Ethiopia, which has proven to be a game-changer for many students. After learning about AddisCoder’s success, the Chronixx team made a founding donation through the Caring Hands of Rastafari (CHOR) Foundation, paving the way for a similar initiative in Jamaica.
A Bridge to the Future
The program is coordinated by Dr. Fokum and Professor Jelani Nelson from the University of California, Berkeley, who founded AddisCoder. Professor Nelson’s model has a strong track record, with many alumni pursuing PhDs and landing jobs at tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and Facebook. By adapting this successful model to Jamaica, JamCoders aims to open doors for local students, positioning them for global opportunities.
No Cost, High Reward
What makes JamCoders truly special is that it offers this world-class training at no cost to participants. Guided by leading academics, students engage in a program that promises internationally recognized outcomes. It’s a rare opportunity for motivated Jamaican youth to gain skills that can change their lives.
