The End of an Era: People’s Leather Supplies Set to Close
A beloved Kingston institution is preparing to close its doors after over 70 years of service. People’s Leather Supplies Limited, located on Slipe Road, has been a go-to spot for artisans, shoemakers, and craft workers across Jamaica. But as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end.
Founded by a family patriarch more than seven decades ago, the store has been a cornerstone for many in the community. For the past 50 years, Hope Smith has been at the helm, taking over after her father’s passing. Now, as she approaches retirement, the absence of a successor has made the decision to close unavoidable.
“It’s heartbreaking,” Smith shared during a recent interview. “With my brother gone and no one in the family willing to take over, I had to make this tough choice.” The loss of long-serving employees, including Ms. Ottie, who dedicated 30 years to the business, has only added to the challenges.
Smith lamented the difficulties in finding new talent. “Young people come in, but they’re glued to their phones. It’s a different generation, and it’s hard to find anyone willing to learn the trade,” she said, shaking her head.
While selling the business was considered, Smith found that potential buyers lacked the necessary understanding of the specialized operations. “This isn’t just any business; you need to know the craft,” she explained. Many buyers even suggested she stay on to manage, but after two years without a vacation, Smith is ready to step away completely.
The decision to close was not made lightly. “I want to preserve the reputation and legacy we’ve built over the years,” she said. In a hopeful twist, she has kept the business name registered and the property within the family, wishing that one of her children or grandchildren might reconsider and revive the store in the future.
People’s Leather Supplies has carved out a unique niche in the local market, providing essential materials for the craft and footwear industries. From leather and insoles to dyes and cleaning products, the store has been a treasure trove for those in need. Even popular local brands, like Bridget Sandals, have relied on the store for supplies.
As the closure date approaches, loyal customers are feeling the pinch. Many are stockpiling supplies to last them through the next few months. “There are other suppliers, but none offer the same range of products,” Smith noted, highlighting the store’s unique offerings.
In recent weeks, the store has been bustling with activity as it holds closing-out sales. “We’ve seen a strong response from our loyal customers,” Smith said, as items like shoes, wallets, and knapsacks were offered at 50% off. The atmosphere is bittersweet, filled with nostalgia and gratitude.
With the staff dwindling from nine to just three, the transition has been emotional. “I’m thankful for our customers who have supported us for so long,” Smith expressed. “It’s tough to say goodbye, but sometimes you have to prioritize what’s best for yourself.”
As Kingston prepares to bid farewell to this cherished establishment, one can’t help but wonder: will the legacy of People’s Leather Supplies live on in the hearts of its community?
