Shanice Thompson Poised to Forge Her Own Path in Fashion | Lifestyle

Shanice Thompson: A Rising Star in Plus-Size Modelling

In the vibrant world of fashion, where high standards often overshadow individuality, Shanice Thompson is carving out her own path. At just 23, this Kingston native is not only a model but also a determined student at the University of Technology (UTech), Jamaica, pursuing a degree in communications, arts, and technology. With a refreshing perspective on the fashion industry, Thompson is ready to challenge norms and inspire others.

Thompson’s journey began with a casting call that left her feeling both hopeful and disheartened. “I was excited to meet a local designer, but when I arrived, there was nothing that could fit me,” she recalls. Surrounded by slender peers, she felt the sting of exclusion. However, this experience only fueled her determination. “It was an eye-opening moment,” she admits, acknowledging the mixed sentiments surrounding plus-sized models in the industry.

The tides have since turned in her favor. Enter Angella Wilkinson, the creative mind behind the Safidah womenswear brand. Thompson is now the star of Wilkinson’s holiday capsule collection, which features stunning pieces adorned with hand-painted Jamaican motifs. “Working with Angella has been a dream,” Thompson shares, her excitement palpable. “To know she saw me and liked my look is a huge compliment.”

As Thompson prepares for her first solo editorial shoot, she reflects on the challenges she has faced. Recently hospitalized for pneumonia, she received the news of her upcoming shoot while in recovery. “I felt vitality rush through me,” she recalls, highlighting how the opportunity reignited her spirit during a tough time. Living with sickle cell anemia since childhood, Thompson has learned to manage her health while pursuing her dreams.

“I see many full-sized models creating space for themselves,” she notes, optimistic about the evolving fashion landscape. “Designers are starting to make fashion-forward looks for all body types.” This shift is something Thompson is eager to be a part of, as she embraces her role in representing diversity on the runway.

Her experiences have been overwhelmingly positive. “The reception at shows has been amazing,” she beams. “If one little girl sees me and thinks, ‘If she can do it, so can I,’ that makes me proud.” This sense of purpose drives her, as she dreams of walking for iconic fashion houses like Mugler and Schiaparelli.

Thompson’s admiration extends beyond the traditional models. She finds inspiration in Olandria Carthen, a rising star who challenges conventional beauty standards. “She’s opening doors for unconventional models,” Thompson explains, emphasizing the importance of representation in the industry.

Balancing her modelling career with academic pursuits has been no easy feat. “My journey has turned a four-year degree into five,” she admits, citing health challenges as a significant factor. Yet, her faith and positive mindset keep her grounded. “Being close to God gives me comfort,” she shares, highlighting the importance of mental health in managing her condition.

As the holiday season approaches, Thompson reflects on family traditions and the bittersweet feelings that come with them. “This is my third Christmas without my mother,” she confides, expressing her longing for family connections. Yet, she remains hopeful, looking forward to the big family dinner that brings everyone together.

With aspirations to learn guitar and delve into music production, Thompson is not just a model; she is a multifaceted individual ready to embrace life’s challenges. “I’m living each day out loud,” she concludes, embodying the spirit of resilience and creativity that defines her journey.

As she steps into the spotlight, one can’t help but wonder: What new heights will Shanice Thompson reach in the ever-evolving world of fashion?
