Jamaica Shines at the World International Model United Nations Conference 2025
The World International Model United Nations (WIMUN) Conference 2025 recently concluded at the iconic United Nations Headquarters in New York City, and it was a historic event. This year marked the largest gathering of delegates in WIMUN’s history, with students from around the globe coming together to engage in spirited debates, negotiations, and simulations that mirror real-world diplomatic scenarios.
Among the standout delegations was Jamaica, proudly represented by 149 students from 13 schools, including notable institutions like Central, Old Harbour, Queen’s, Immaculate, Campion, Hillel, Wolmer’s Boys’, and Garvey Maceo high schools. The energy and enthusiasm of these young delegates were palpable as they immersed themselves in discussions about pressing global issues.
To honor their remarkable participation, Jamaica’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Brian Wallace, hosted a special luncheon for the delegation in his office. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and camaraderie as guests savored traditional Jamaican dishes, reflecting on their achievements and the invaluable experiences gained during the conference. “It’s a proud moment for us to see our youth engaging on such a significant platform,” Ambassador Wallace remarked, highlighting the importance of nurturing future leaders.
WIMUN is not just any conference; it’s a prestigious simulation of the United Nations that takes place annually. Students from around the world gather to learn about the UN’s workings, develop negotiation skills, and foster a sense of global citizenship. This year, Jamaica joined approximately 60 countries in this enriching experience, showcasing the island’s commitment to education and youth empowerment.
The Jamaican students returned home on Saturday, filled with stories and insights from their time at WIMUN. Many were recognized for their exceptional contributions, standing out among a sea of talented participants. “It was an eye-opening experience,” shared one student from Campion High School. “We learned so much about diplomacy and teamwork, and it felt amazing to represent Jamaica on such a grand stage.”
The journey to New York was made possible through a collaborative effort involving corporate sponsors, parents, parent-teacher associations, alumni, and various fundraising initiatives. A significant contributor this year was the American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ), which partnered with JetBlue to provide round-trip tickets for the students. “We believe in inspiring the next generation through meaningful initiatives,” said AFJ Executive Director Caron Chung, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to youth and education.
As the Jamaican delegation reflects on their experiences at WIMUN 2025, it’s clear that the impact of such events extends beyond the conference walls. They return home not just as students but as ambassadors of their nation, equipped with knowledge and skills that will serve them well in the future.
With the world becoming increasingly interconnected, one can’t help but wonder: how will these young leaders shape the future of Jamaica and the global community? The seeds of diplomacy and understanding have been planted, and the possibilities are endless.
