NWC Introduces Amnesty Program for Small Businesses with Unpaid Bills | RJR News

NWC Launches Three-Month Amnesty for Small Businesses in Jamaica

In a move that’s sure to bring relief to many, the National Water Commission (NWC) has rolled out a special three-month amnesty program aimed at small business operators across Jamaica who are struggling with outstanding water bills. This initiative, running from September 1 to November 30, is a lifeline for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) that have found themselves in a tight spot.

Who Benefits?

The amnesty is specifically designed for two categories of small business customers. First, it targets accounts that have been inactive or disconnected for more than three months. Second, it includes active accounts that have accrued debts exceeding $30,000 for over six months. This means that if you’re a small business owner feeling the pinch, now is the time to take action.

What’s on Offer?

The NWC is offering a generous 50% write-off on outstanding water bills for eligible businesses. But that’s not all! Customers who qualify will also enjoy a 100% waiver on reconnection fees, making it easier to get back on track without the burden of additional costs. Imagine being able to reconnect your water supply without worrying about those pesky fees!

Flexible Payment Plans

One of the standout features of this amnesty is the flexibility it offers. The NWC has announced that qualifying accounts will have up to three months to settle their remaining arrears without the threat of disconnection. This grace period allows business owners to manage their finances better and plan for the future. In special cases, the NWC may even approve negotiated settlement terms, providing a tailored approach to each business’s unique situation.

Who’s Not Eligible?

While this initiative is a fantastic opportunity for many, it’s important to note that not everyone qualifies. Residential customers and businesses that have previously benefited from other amnesty offers earlier in 2025 are not eligible for this program. This ensures that the focus remains on those who are currently in need of assistance.

A Timely Initiative

This amnesty comes on the heels of a similar debt relief program offered to residential accounts earlier this year. It’s clear that the NWC is committed to supporting the community, especially during challenging times. “This initiative is about giving our small businesses a fighting chance,” said a spokesperson from the NWC. “We understand the struggles they face, and we want to help them thrive.”

Community Response

Local business owners have expressed a mix of relief and gratitude. “This is a blessing for us,” said Marlene, who runs a small bakery in Kingston. “Every little bit helps, and I’m thankful the NWC is looking out for us.” Many are hopeful that this initiative will not only help them settle their debts but also allow them to invest in their businesses and contribute to the local economy.

Looking Ahead

As the amnesty period unfolds, many are left wondering: will this be enough to help small businesses bounce back? With the right support, Jamaica’s MSMEs can not only survive but thrive, contributing to the vibrant tapestry of our economy. So, if you’re a small business owner, don’t miss out on this opportunity—take the first step towards financial relief today!
