Every Second Counts: The Heart Foundation of Jamaica Urges CPR Training for All
The Heart Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ) is making a heartfelt plea to all Jamaicans: learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). This lifesaving skill can be the difference between life and death, not just at home but also in workplaces and public spaces. “Everyone should take time to become certified. The life that may be saved could be your own family member,” said HFJ Executive Director, Deborah Chen, in a recent interview with JIS News.
Why CPR Matters
As we observe CPR Week 2025 from August 18 to 23, under the theme ‘Every Second Counts in Cardiac Arrest,’ the urgency of this message becomes even clearer. Emergencies can strike at any moment—whether it’s a colleague collapsing at work, a child choking at home, or someone being pulled from the water at the beach. Knowing how to administer CPR can empower bystanders to act swiftly and effectively.
Chen emphasizes, “Our goal is to equip every Jamaican with the skills to save a life. Too often, sudden medical emergencies end in tragedy simply because bystanders don’t know how to respond.” This sentiment resonates deeply, especially in a country where community ties are strong, and every life matters.
Activities to Raise Awareness
To spread the word about the importance of CPR training, HFJ has planned a series of engaging activities during CPR Week. On Tuesday, August 19, there will be a CPR demonstration at Emancipation Park in Kingston from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. This event is a fantastic opportunity for families to learn together and see CPR techniques in action.
The following day, Wednesday, August 20, HFJ will host an Emergency Cardiac Care (ECC) virtual symposium titled ‘Sudden Cardiac Arrest – Young and Breathless.’ This online event aims to educate participants about the risks and responses associated with cardiac emergencies, particularly among younger individuals.
The week will culminate with Family & Friends CPR Day at HFJ’s Beechwood Avenue office on Saturday, August 23, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This event invites families to come together, learn, and practice CPR in a supportive environment.
Training for Everyone
HFJ is not just about raising awareness; they are also committed to providing training. As an accredited American Heart Association (AHA) Training Centre, HFJ offers Emergency Cardiac Care (ECC) courses for everyone—from the general public to healthcare professionals like doctors, nurses, and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). Upon completion, participants receive internationally recognized AHA certification, ensuring they are well-equipped to handle emergencies.
With a dedicated team of highly trained instructors, HFJ travels across Jamaica to deliver these essential courses, making it easier for everyone to gain these lifesaving skills.
A Community Effort
The call for CPR training is not just a message from HFJ; it’s a community effort. Many Jamaicans have shared their thoughts on the importance of being prepared. “You never know when you might need it,” says local resident Marcia Thompson. “It’s better to be ready than to regret not knowing what to do.”
As the HFJ continues its mission to build lifesaving skills across the island, the hope is that every Jamaican will recognize the value of being equipped to save a life. So, will you take the step to learn CPR? After all, every second counts.
