Nadine Sutherland: A Triple Threat Shining Bright at the Essence Festival

There’s no stopping Nadine Sutherland, the Jamaican superstar who has just added “award-winning actress” to her impressive résumé. Recently, she took on a leading role in the short film Someone Loves You, and the buzz around her performance has been electric. The film was selected for screening at the prestigious Essence Festival of Culture, a platform that celebrates the richness of the Black experience globally. For Sutherland, being part of such an event in New Orleans was nothing short of “incredible.”

A Dream Come True

The excitement didn’t stop there. Just a day after the screening, Sutherland received thrilling news from her team member, Judith Bodley: Someone Loves You had won the award for Best Short Film at the festival. The following morning, Sutherland shared her joy with her fans, affectionately known as ‘Tribers.’ “I’m still pinching myself, still feeling like I’m walking in a dream,” she expressed. Her heartfelt message resonated with many, showcasing her genuine gratitude for the opportunity.

The Story Behind the Film

Someone Loves You tells the poignant story of estranged members of a Jamaican family in New York City, grappling with the declining health of their beloved matriarch, a once-famous artist. The film is produced by Amanda Mandii and Victoria Perry, who also co-wrote and co-directed it. The narrative dives deep into family dynamics, love, and the struggles of mental health, making it relatable to many.

A Journey into Acting

Reflecting on her journey, Sutherland shared how she got involved with the film. “The writer and producer reached out to me on Instagram,” she recalled. Despite her background in performing arts, she never envisioned herself back in the spotlight. “I thought I would be more behind the scenes, pouring into children,” she admitted. But after a challenge disrupted her flow, she decided to embrace her passion once again.

Immersing in the Role

Studying her lines and getting into character was no small feat. Sutherland portrayed a character with paranoia-schizophrenia, drawing inspiration from a close family friend who battled dementia. “I used her as a reference,” she explained. The emotional depth of the role was particularly challenging, especially during a dinner scene that left her shaken. “I was shaking like a leaf,” she laughed, crediting her co-star Mitzie Pratt for her support during those intense moments.

Looking Ahead

With the success of Someone Loves You, Sutherland is eager to explore more acting roles. Her family has always encouraged her to pursue acting, and now, she’s ready to take that leap. “The young lady who played my daughter in the film told me I should start taking acting lessons because I’m a natural,” she shared, beaming with pride.

As Sutherland continues to shine in her multifaceted career, one can’t help but wonder: What’s next for this talented triple threat? With her passion and dedication, the sky’s the limit for Nadine Sutherland.
