Announcing the Third Edition of the Women in FinTech Hackathon!

Empowering Women in FinTech: The 2022 Women in FinTech Hackathon

The FinTech industry has witnessed a gradual yet significant shift towards inclusivity, particularly in the realm of female entrepreneurship. Organizations like HiPipo are at the forefront of this movement, creating platforms for women innovators, developers, and techpreneurs to bring their ideas to life. The upcoming 2022 Women in FinTech Hackathon is a prime example of this initiative, designed to empower women and foster innovation in the digital financial services sector.

A Look Back: The 2021 Hackathon

In 2021, the hackathon was a resounding success, with six teams sharing a prize pool of USD 10,000, along with various other benefits. Participants not only competed for monetary rewards but also gained invaluable experience and exposure by being part of a vibrant community of like-minded individuals. The event served as a launchpad for many female-led startups, showcasing the potential of women in the FinTech landscape.

When to Participate

The hackathon is set to take place in two phases. Interested participants from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan can register for the virtual round from August 17 to August 26. Meanwhile, Ugandan participants will have their submission window from August 20 to August 29. This staggered approach allows for a broader reach and encourages participation from various regions.

Onboarding and Training

The 2022 edition will kick off with a virtual East African round, running from August 29 to September 2. During this five-day training and assessment period, participants will receive daily guidance and mentorship. The top team from each country will automatically qualify for the grand finale, which will be held in Kampala. This structured onboarding process ensures that participants are well-prepared to showcase their innovative solutions.

The Hackathon’s Focus

HiPipo, through its Include Everyone Program, aims to identify, analyze, and promote trends in Digital Financial Services (DFS). The hackathon will introduce participants to essential tools and technologies, including Mojaloop Open-Source Software. Participants will also receive guidance based on foundational materials from the Level One Project, covering principles of inclusive finance and Instant and Inclusive Payment Systems (IIPS).

In previous editions, partnerships have played a crucial role in the hackathon’s success. For instance, in September 2020, ModusBox collaborated with HiPipo to bring together 15 female-led FinTech teams for the inaugural event. Last year saw an increase in participation, with over 17 teams shortlisted, highlighting the growing interest and potential in this space.

Who Can Join?

The hackathon is specifically designed for women-led teams, consisting of 2 to 4 members, with at least 67% female representation. This focus on female participation is crucial in addressing the gender gap in technology and digital financial services. By creating a supportive environment, the hackathon aims to empower women to take the lead in FinTech innovation.

Prizes and Benefits

The hackathon offers a wealth of opportunities for participants. Winners will share a prize pool of up to USD 10,000, but the benefits extend far beyond monetary rewards. Participants will have the chance to network with fellow developers and industry leaders, receive mentorship from experienced professionals, and gain access to cutting-edge technology and infrastructure. Additionally, the top three teams will be awarded a fully paid 90-day Incubator Program, providing further support for their entrepreneurial journeys.

Organizers and Support

HiPipo, a leading organization in the digital age, is the main organizer of the hackathon. Their commitment to promoting digital financial inclusion is evident through initiatives like this hackathon. The event is further supported by partners such as the Level One Project, Mojaloop, ModusBox, and Crosslake Technologies, along with backing from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Together, they aim to close the gender gap in access to technology and digital financial services.

The Vision Ahead

The 2022 Women in FinTech Hackathon is not just an event; it’s a movement towards achieving a leveled playing field in the FinTech sector. Innocent Kawooya, CEO of HiPipo, emphasizes the importance of maximizing Africa’s digital potential, ensuring that everyone can participate in the innovation and adoption of secure digital financial services.

This hackathon represents a unique opportunity for women to step into the spotlight, harness their skills, and contribute to the evolving landscape of FinTech. With new partners like CyberPLC Academy joining the initiative, the excitement and potential for growth are palpable.
