Luno Reports Surge in Malaysian Women’s Interest in Cryptocurrency

The Rise of Women in Fintech: A Look at Luno’s Impact in Malaysia

Introduction to Fintech in Malaysia

The fintech landscape in Malaysia is rapidly evolving, with digital asset exchanges like Luno leading the charge. As financial technology becomes more accessible, it’s essential to highlight the demographic shifts within this space, particularly the growing participation of women in cryptocurrency investments.

Luno’s Remarkable Growth Among Female Users

Luno, a regulated digital asset exchange in Malaysia, has reported a staggering increase in its female user base. From just 16,000 in 2020, the number of female users skyrocketed to over 120,000 in 2021. This remarkable growth reflects a more than sevenfold increase, showcasing a significant shift in how women engage with digital assets.

Transaction Volume Surge

The financial commitment of female users has also seen a dramatic rise. In 2021, the transaction volume among women increased twelve times year-on-year, jumping from RM170 million to over RM2 billion. This surge indicates not only a growing interest in cryptocurrency but also a shift in investment strategies among women in Malaysia.

User Demographics: Age Groups and Preferences

Diving deeper into the demographics, the majority of Luno’s female users are concentrated in the 30-39 age group, accounting for 33% of transactions. This is followed by the 25-29 age group at 25%, the 18-24 age group at 17%, and the 40-49 age group at 16%. Most women on the platform are primarily buying cryptocurrencies for investment purposes, while others engage in trading, sending and receiving, and making payments.

Luno’s Commitment to Education

Scarlett Chai, Malaysia’s Marketing Manager at Luno, emphasizes the company’s commitment to educating the public about digital assets. “At Luno, we are committed to educating the public on the power of digital assets as an alternative investment,” she states. This initiative has played a crucial role in raising awareness among a broader audience, particularly women.

Women-in-Crypto Series: Tailored Educational Initiatives

To further support female participation in the fintech space, Luno has organized a series of educational webinars specifically designed for women, known as the Women-in-Crypto series. These sessions aim to demystify digital assets and empower women to explore investment opportunities in this exciting field. By making the platform more accessible and inclusive, Luno is actively encouraging more women to engage with cryptocurrencies.

The Future of Women in Fintech

The upward trend in female participation in the fintech sector, particularly in cryptocurrency investments, is a positive sign for the industry. As platforms like Luno continue to promote education and inclusivity, we can expect to see even more women stepping into the world of digital assets. This shift not only benefits individual investors but also contributes to a more diverse and balanced financial ecosystem.
